My dad does a really unique thing every Tuesday. He has done it for twelve years and will continue doing it for as long as he is able. It is only for my brother, but occasionally my sister and I, as well as our spouses, are blessed by receiving it too. What is it?

Tuesdays with Dad.

Tuesdays with Dad is a weekly email that my dad sends to my brother, Michael, who lives in New York. The sole purpose of Tuesdays with Dad is to encourage Michael to be well grounded in what is important in life and to stay true to who God has made him to be. A husband, a father, a son, a brother, a friend, a businessman, a man of God.

My dad has taken the time and made the effort to invest in my brother (and my sister and I!) for 37 years. His investment didn’t stop when we went to college or when we got married or started having families of our own, he continued because he sees the value in investing in others, especially your children. My dad also spends hours upon hours investing in so many other people in his life, some of whom read this blog!

My dad, Rick Kane, is kind, loving, patient and forgiving. He is a reflection of his dad, Col. Robert Kane, an amazing man who I wish was still alive today. And my brother is becoming a reflection of our dad. And a side note, Phillip is a reflection of his dad, yet another godly man who has invested in the lives of his children.

They all are a reflection of our heavenly dad, the big man upstairs, God himself.

And the reflection, the legacy, continues because God lives within each of them.

Although the men in my life are all pretty incredible, they are still human and will mess up. We all fall short of the glory of God. There is no getting around that one! But God is the ultimate, perfect Father.

Here are just a few traits about our heavenly dad. These are taken straight from scripture and the list could easily go on…

God is creator, He is everlasting, He is merciful, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. God is faithful, He forgives, He will never leave you, He is perfect, all His ways are just and upright. God is righteous and He knows the hearts of mankind. He is our Father, our shepherd, our light, our fortress, our refuge, our stronghold, our salvation, our song. He redeems, He restores, He heals, He satisfies, He renews. He is our comforter, our counselor and our advocate. He is great, He is light to the darkness, He is hope, He is all powerful, He is sovereign, He is all wise. He is our help and does not grow weary, He never sleeps. He is living and makes all things possible. There is no sin in Him, there is no falsehood in Him, there is no darkness in Him. He is good and He is kind. He is our Savior and the one who makes us new. God is holy, He is a promise keeping God and God is the only God.

Hallelujah!

As Father’s Day approaches, and you think about your dad, whether that stirs up sweet memories and feelings of joy or painful memories and feelings of anger, may it cause you to truly appreciate and praise our heavenly dad.

No dad is perfect except God.

I encourage you to write the list above out in a journal. Reflect on each one. Which one stands out to you right now in your life? Do you have a distorted view of who God is because of who your dad is? Ask God to reframe your mind and open your heart to see Him as He is, your perfect dad.

And praise Him for it.

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” 1 John 3:1

God, you are my kind and loving dad, may I feel your loving arms around me and praise your name always.

This story of your dad’s intentional faithfulness in his kids’ lives brought me to tears. Passing it along to my husband. This is a great way to continue to share love for one’s grown children…they never fall out of the desire to hear the loving thoughts and words poured out by their dad! (and this all rings true of our relationship with our Heavenly Father as well!) Thank you for sharing your family’s legacy for all to read!

    • I’m so glad you enjoyed reading it. And you are so right that we never stop desiring to hear loving words from our dad. I hope that your husband will be encouraged to keep investing in the lives of children and others. Blessings to you!

  • Meredith,
I love sharing this good news with others, that Abba Father is good, and loves us without conditions. I love your reminders that He is kind, and especially that He lavishes us with love through adoption into His family! Thanks for giving us a solid reflection to be grateful for during Father’s Day! My dad is pretty amazing as well, and he reflects Abba’s love beautifully, but I’ve cried with many friends who long to feel loved by their dad. Through the truth of your words they can see they are loved by Abba! Thanks for your timely message!
